According to a DEPA report, the value of Thailand’s digital content market rose 7% to 42 billion baht in 2021, driven by the expansion of the gaming sector, while the gaming industry was valued at 37 billion baht last year mainly due to revenue by mobile game publishers.

The value of Thailand’s digital content industry is expected to reach 62.4 billion baht by 2024, driven by strong growth in the games industry and the revival of the animation sector.

The Digital Economy Promotion Agency (DEPA) conducted a study on the digital content industry in 2021 in cooperation with the Digital Content Association of Thailand, the Thai Animation and Computer Graphic Association, the Thai Game Software Industry Association and other private agencies. The study evaluated the digital content market by examining three categories: games, animation and characters, with each category consisting of intellectual property owners, outsourcing companies and distributors.

According to a DEPA report, the value of Thailand’s digital content market rose 7% to 42 billion baht in 2021 due to the expansion of the gaming sector. Last year, the gaming industry was valued at 37 billion baht, mostly driven by revenue from mobile game publishers. The animation industry grew 11% in 2021 to hit 3.4 billion baht. The surge is attributed to animation publishers’ need to outsource services to produce more content to meet consumer demand during the pandemic.

Meanwhile, according to the report, character licensing revenue fell by half to 486 million baht in 2021, due to a drop in demand for gifts, accessories and fashion products as a result of reduced consumer spending and trade regulations.

DEPA expects Thailand’s digital content industry to expand steadily in the coming years, with total revenues reaching 53.7 billion baht in 2022 and then rising to 62.4 billion baht by 2024. (NNT)

The Australian government must remove slave labor from our supply chains, writes Mark Cubit.

Five years ago, legislation abolishing modern slavery was passed by several Western democracies, including Australia.

Recognizing the general principle that modern slavery – from human trafficking to forced labour, debt bondage to forced marriage and child labor – is not only repugnant but alive and well, legislation has been drafted in Australia with the intention of ending the practice in our region.

There were caveats. Compliance and reporting costs were seen as onerous and potentially irrelevant for many Australian businesses. New South Wales legislation introduced thresholds into legislation so that companies with annual sales of less than $50 million were not required to report on their supply chains.

Governments of all sizes have had to rid their massive supply chains of illicit labor practices without a $50 million threshold, even as changes to apply the legislation to seasonal agricultural workers were defeated in Parliament.

While perfect shouldn’t be the enemy of good, it seems you can drive a Mac truck through the considerable loopholes in the legislation.

In February, the Human Rights Law Center issued a report paper promise who assessed the impact of the legislation. In four sectors riddled with exploitative practices – the garment industry in China, rubber gloves in Malaysia, seafood in Thailand and fresh produce from Australia – it was found that 77 percent of companies failed to comply with basic reporting requirements.

The legislation only scratches the surface. Action on Poverty reports in Timor-Leste, 21 years after the first democratically held elections, rural Timorese women and girls are being lured to the capital with promises of legal jobs or education and forced into prostitution or domestic bondage. Timorese families may send their children into domestic servitude or into farming to pay off debts.

Foreign migrant women are subjected to sex trafficking in Timor-Leste, while men and boys from Burma, Cambodia and Thailand are forced to work on fishing boats in Timor’s waters and in inhumane conditions. AoP works with local NGO Pradet, which provides temporary safe shelter, counseling and health care for people who have been trafficked to Timor-Leste.

And just this week, ABC reported on 13 workers who were exploited through debt bondage and violence by a third-party company called Brightway to make gloves for Australian company Ansell. An outsourcing of exploitation believed to be done to avoid the $50M reporting trigger.

If hundreds of workers can be exploited and local NGOs know about exploitative labor practices, why not feed that information back to a government agency in Australia for action?

Current legislation risks becoming a useless fig leaf that leads us to believe that such practices are being eradicated when in fact nobody is looking.

Instead of the passive mechanism of reporting supply chains and labor practices by companies – most of which obviously don’t bother to comply – what we need to eradicate this practice is a proactive police officer on guard, a body to which cases of exploitation can be reported and which then has the power to investigate and impose legal sanctions on these cases.

If this type of exploitation is a case of market failure, it is up to all levels of government to correct it and enact laws that succeed and uphold human dignity and rights.

Trainwreck: Woodstock ’99, all episodes streaming on Netflix

Netflix appears to be carving out a new niche documentary drama all of its own: When Music Festivals Go Horribly Wrong.

2019 brought us Fyre: The Greatest Party That Never Happened – the tale of the doomed luxury influencer festival on an island in the Bahamas.

Now, the three-part Trainwreck: Woodstock ’99 tells the breathtaking tale of how attempts to recreate the legendary festival 30 years later ended in an orgy of violence.

Each episode follows a day of the festival that unfolds like a disaster movie as one terrifying decision after another creates the perfect conditions for mob domination.

A countdown clock increases the excitement, ticking down the hours and minutes until disaster strikes.

The seed was sown early in the planning. Clearly the event was for profit (what happened to those hippie ideals?), the venue chosen was a soulless disused air force base.

To deter fence jumpers, an eight-mile fence was erected around the site, as in a previous revival.

To cut costs, infrastructure and security were outsourced cheaply, and food and drink vendors could charge as much as they wanted.

As soon as the 250,000 revelers hit the grounds, things began to unravel.

It was a macho crowd with a drunk, misogynistic “fraternity boy” mentality and a slate of bands made up mostly of “nu-metal” acts that shook things up.

Teenage girls in the crowd said they were molested – and it was later revealed to be worse – including in the mosh pit while watching bands.

Actresses were insulted.

The weather was scorching hot, there was hardly any place to seek shade and if you needed water you either had to pay an inflated price or take your chances with the free supply, which turned out to be terribly polluted (if you had never heard of). of the ‘moat mouth’ you have now).

Violence increased on Saturday night and a truck was driven into the middle of a hangar filled with thousands of ravers during a Fatboy Slim DJ set.

Woodstock ’99 organizers insisted the festival ran smoothly – despite footage caught on camera by news outlets
– Credit: Courtesy of Netflix

But despite mounting evidence to the contrary, recorded by on-site journalists and film crews, organizers at their daily press conference claimed these were isolated incidents, the actions of “a few bad apples”.

There’s buck-passing and blame in today’s testimony.

Then, just when you think things can’t get any worse, last night 10,000 candles are distributed to the now dangerously erratic crowd during the Red Hot Chili Peppers’ set for a vigil to commemorate the Columbine school shooting tragedy.

What is intended as a poignant statement against violence ignites the fuse for a night of rioting.

The next morning the site is a smoldering wasteland. So much for peace and love.

Unpaired, stream now on Netflix

The reboot of Sex and the City (And Just Like That) fizzled out for me. Tucked away in the “just OK” category, it lacked the sparkle and froth that oozed from the ’90s smash hit.

Granted, there’s nothing “jazzy” about menopause, death, or marital troubles, but my god, it was depressing, wasn’t it? It gave the impression that there is nothing to look forward to in midlife or later, apart from sagging jaws, hot flashes and digestive problems.

But I think creator Darren Star has pretty much redeemed himself with Uncoupled after following the antics of a close-knit group of middle-aged gay men in New York.

Viewers will recognize character similarities between this and SATC. Billy (Emerson Brooks) is the archetype of “Samantha” – a successful playboy who roams the city.

Colin (Tuc Watkins) is the analytical “Miranda”.

Michael (Neil Patrick Harris) is “Charlotte”. And Stanley (Brooks Ashmanska) is, well, “Stanley”. There’s no definitive “Carrie,” but we let Suzanne (Tisha Campbell), who’s just fabulous, wear that crown.

Like Sex and the City, Uncoupled prioritizes the lifestyle of New York’s yuppies, who spend more time sipping champagne in art galleries and browsing fancy dinners than actually working.

Real estate agent Michael is living the dream – he shares a chic apartment with his financial bigwig life partner Colin, surrounded by friends he loves and cherishes.

All good things must come to an end, however, and Michael falters and is taken completely by surprise when Colin announces he’s leaving at his surprise 50th birthday party.

So follow the ups and downs of a man in his late 40s on the city’s dating scene. There’s a lot of heart and soul in it (I may have cried a little in episode one), but also a lot of fun in the series that ended with so many cliffhangers that surely there will be a second season?

Thirteen Lives

Thirteen Lives is now streaming on Amazon Prime

Hollywood heavyweight Ron Howard has opted for the lighter touch in this portrayal of the incredible true story of the rescue of 12 boys and their soccer coach from a Thai cave.

That’s not to say there’s a lack of thrills…but in the case of Thirteen Lives, the less-is-more approach has worked sensationally in the director’s favour.

Gone are the explosions and fast-paced sequences of his earlier work, replaced with an eerie, inhospitable underwater nightmare and a soundtrack punctuated by the clinking of oxygen tanks against rocks, heavy breathing and gear scraping at the underside of the cave wall.

It’s summer 2018. The World Cup is in full swing. And a young soccer team in Ban Chong, Thailand, play the beautiful game in the foothills of a lush valley on the border with Myanmar.

One of the boys is celebrating his birthday and the whole team is invited to a barbecue that night… but not before they’ve driven past the Tham Luang Caves with their soccer coach to explore them.

A serenity remains. In the music, the setting, the way the boys say a prayer to the sleeping goddess at the cave entrance before disappearing into the dark. It seems impossible that anything bad could happen.

Their parents, upset by their sons’ late arrival, could hardly fathom what was to come next. And when news of a lightning monsoon arrives, the unimaginable becomes reality.

When it becomes clear that the entire team is lurking somewhere in the back of the cave system, Thai authorities, led by their governor, rush to the rescue. But even Thailand’s Navy Seals are ill-prepared for the challenges ahead – a series of chambers linked by narrow tunnels and deep dives that continue to swell with water by the minute.

In the coming days, the rescue center will take over the village and become an enclave of 5,000 volunteers from 17 countries. Including Thanet Natisri, an Illinois resident (native Thai), a water engineer who is asking the government and local farmers to allow him to divert downpours off the mountain to nearby land. And veteran volunteer rescue divers, the stoic Ricky Stanton (Viggo Mortensen) and John Volanthen (Colin Farrell).

The seasoned experts are initially dismissed as oldtimers and hobbyists. But when they find the guys hours after their first try, it becomes clear that these guys are the right ones for the job.

Aided by hundreds of Thai locals, the duo, along with friends Richard “Harry” Harris (Joel Edgerton), Chris Jewell (Tom Bateman) and Jason Mallinson (Paul Gleeson), pull off one of the world’s greatest and deadliest escapes of all time.

Thirteen Lives is claustrophobic, compelling and downright inspiring. It is dedicated to Navy Seal diver Saman Kunan, who lost his life while delivering oxygen tanks to the rescue.

August 11, 2022

Empresaria Group plc (AIM: EMR), the international specialist recruitment group, has announced its unaudited interim results for the six-month period ended 30 June 2022 with a marginal increase in revenue of 1% on a constant currency basis compared to the same period last year.

Net fee income increased in UK & Europe, APAC and Offshore Services but decreased in the Americas.

Adjusted operating income rose 5% year over year, reflecting ongoing investments to support future growth.

(£m) H1 2022 H1 2021 % change % change at constant currency
revenue 129.8 129.8 0% 1%
Net Fee Income (Gross Profit) 32.6 28.4 fifteen% fifteen%
Adjusted operating result 4.5 4.3 5% 5%
operating result 3.8 2.7 41%
profit before taxes 3.3 2.4 38%

Chief Executive Officer Rhona Driggs said: “We are pleased to report solid growth in net fee income and continued progress in growing our adjusted operating income as we continue to invest in our businesses. We are seeing the benefits of the investments made, our team, our technology and the expansion of our service offering, with early successes of our Recruitment Process Outsourcing (RPO) offering in APAC. These are key to our future growth and the achievement of our mid-term adjusted operating profit target of £20m.”

During the half year, Tony Martin CBE (Commander of the British Empire), Non-Executive Chair, announced his resignation from his position on the Board of Directors. Martin joined the Empresaria Board in 2004 as Chairman.

Penny Freer, a non-executive director since 2005, was appointed interim chair following Martin’s resignation.

Revenue by Region

(£m) H1 2022 H1 2021 % change constant currency
UK and Europe 63.2 67.9 -7% -5%

Net fee income by region

(£m) H1 2022 H1 2021 % change constant currency

APAC 7.9 6.6 20% 22%
America 4.6 5.0 -8th% -12%
offshore services 6.1 3.2 91% 85%

The UK and Europe had a mixed performance for the first half of the year, with total net fee income up 3% (4% cc) but profits down 20%. The UK business reported a 12% increase in net fee income, reflecting strong performances in the professional business. UK IT operations results continued to be “disappointing” as net fee income fell year-on-year and the group said it was taking action to counteract this.

In APAC (excluding offshore services in India and the Philippines), net fee income grew 20% (22% at constant currency) with strong growth in most countries, including record first-half net fee income in Indonesia, the Philippines, and Thailand Japan . Earnings were in line with the prior year, reflecting a full period of regional overheads along with some challenges in Australia, where stiff competition for talent is leading to significant counteroffers. The growth in net fee income was complemented by the Group’s new RPO service offering in the region, which has already started to show results.

In the Americas, net fee and commission income decreased 8% (12% at constant currency) and operating income decreased 53%. The main reason for these results was the expected decline in healthcare after an extremely strong 2021, driven by demand related to Covid-19 vaccination and testing for a high volume of similar roles that the group could fulfill more efficiently.

The Group’s US IT operations saw a slight year-over-year decline in net fee income against a strong peer market in 2021 and in a highly competitive market where counter-offers have become the norm. In Latin America, the group saw a slight decline in net fee income due to a major election project in Chile last year and a slow recovery from Covid-19 in Peru.

Offshore Services has continued its strong momentum through 2021-2022 with net fee income growth of 91% (85% at constant exchange rates) and earnings growth of 94% annually. The UK operation has continued to grow significantly, with the number of billable jobs up by a third as of the end of 2021. Progress in the US market has slowed in the first half of the year, with new growth being offset by lower demand for healthcare workers from customers. The group added that it will invest in the second half of the year to increase capacity and enable entry into the next phase of growth.

The group said hiring has proven difficult in certain markets due to a lack of available talent and increased salary expectations for those willing to make the switch, but added that they have recently seen a surge in hiring in particular recorded in the APAC region. In addition, the group has made progress in complementing its recruitment teams with its offshore resources.

Empresaria said it had a solid start to 2022. Driggs added, “In the second half of the year we will continue to invest in headcount to take advantage of current market demand and we will also expand our offshore services capabilities as we continue to see significant growth potential.”

“We are optimistic about the year ahead as talent demand is strong despite global macroeconomic uncertainties,” continued Driggs. “Given the diversification of our business and the strength of our new leadership team, we are confident that we will continue to deliver on our strategic priorities and build on the positive momentum we have seen in the first half. We expect full-year earnings to be in line with market expectations.”

In a statement, the company said: “Global macroeconomic uncertainties are mounting and the impact of rising inflation in many of our markets has yet to be fully appreciated,” the group said. “However, we have not yet identified any significant negative impacts and customer demand remains strong.”

Empresaria shares last traded at £61.25, up 1.24% on the day. The company has a market capitalization of £30.41 million.
